Why are they Postcards From The Margins?

I have letters that were written in dire moments in the hope that someone would listen and if they didn’t, the act of making meaning from the moment helped.

Today, I am writing to you via email, but you can feel the magic of green-inked letters and precious polaroids slipped in the envelope in every e-letter I send.

  • I have held postcards from loved ones in hospice.
  • I sent sketches of wildflowers to political prisoners missing wild spaces.
  • I carried postcards in my bag and read them in hospital, reminding myself of a connective web of love that reaches beyond borders or diagnoses.
  • I’ve had cards handed to me that contained messages that helped me hold on when it seemed beyond all my strength.
  • I’ve sent messages from the darkest times in my life out into a future I wasn’t sure was coming but longed for.

These are Postcards From The Margins: missives where we explore otherness, embodiment, the boundaries where we connect and how we live in marginalised bodies in a polarised society.

Postcards are moments of connection and the power of our stories.

The margins are a space many of us find ourselves in, feeling alone, lost, resource-less, scared and off the track we’d hoped for. Many folx find themselves on the margins from discrimination and systemic prejudice but we can also end up there when we are lost in our grief or newly sick and struggling. All the ways in which we can be hurt and be alone can take us to this place, but we are not alone here.

If you are looking for support, solidarity, encouragement and resources for wellness and living well in painful times, then I write these for you.
